Theatre & Musical Theatre Photographer | Adam Cavanagh
Theatre photography is about timing, light, expression and storytelling.
I’m Adam, a professional photographer available for theatre photography in Newcastle and the Hunter Regions of NSW. Before photography became my career, I studied Music Theatre at WAAPA, so I understand how much work goes into a production long before the audience sees it. The rehearsals, the direction, the lighting, the choreography, the costumes, the nerves, the timing and the tiny details all matter.
That background gives me a genuine appreciation for theatre, opera, musical theatre, dance and live stage productions. My focus is on creating strong, atmospheric images that show the production at its best. The lighting. The set. The costumes. The movement. The emotion. The big dramatic moments and the smaller details that help tell the story.
I use professional Canon mirrorless cameras and premium Canon lenses, which allow me to work confidently in low light and fast-changing stage conditions. Theatre lighting can be beautiful, but it can also be difficult to photograph well, so having the right equipment and the experience to use it properly makes a real difference.
I also carry $20 million public liability insurance, which is often required by theatres, schools, councils, venues, production companies and event organisers.
My theatre & music theatre photography is designed to help productions look polished, professional and exciting online. Whether you need promotional images, cast photos, production stills, social media content, program images, website photos or a beautiful archive of the show, I can photograph your production in a way that feels dramatic, clean and useful.
I photograph musical theatre and theatre productions across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock, the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and surrounding areas.

My Approach to Theatre & Musical Theatre Photography
Good theatre & music theatre photography should never get in the way of the show. That is why I photograph dress rehearsals instead of actual performances. A dress rehearsal gives me the chance to work carefully, quietly and professionally while still capturing the production as close to the final show as possible.
It also means I can capture stronger angles, key scenes, cast moments and production details without blocking audience views or drawing attention during a live ticketed performance.
As a Newcastle & Hunter region theatre photographer, I work quietly, quickly and professionally.
I am not there to interrupt the rehearsal, distract the performers or get in the way of the production team. I am there to capture the show as it is being prepared for the stage.
The goal is to create images that feel like the production itself. Just strong, honest theatre photography that captures the work, energy and atmosphere of the production.
Theatre Photographer for Plays, Opera, Musicals & Stage Productions
Newcastle and the Hunter Region has a strong performing arts and musical theatre scene, with local theatre companies, schools, dance studios, performing arts groups and independent productions regularly bringing shows to life. As a musical theatre photographer in Newcastle & the Hunter Region, I can capture the energy, emotion and movement of your production in a way that helps it look professional across your marketing.
Professional theatre & music theatre photography is useful for promoting the current show, creating social media content, sending images to local media, creating website and program images, archiving the production properly and promoting future auditions and productions.
For theatre companies and production teams, the images can be used to promote the current show, advertise future performances, update websites and create a professional record of the production.
For schools and performing arts groups, theatre photography gives families, students and performers a beautiful record of the work that went into the show.
For venues and event organisers, strong photography helps show the experience and quality of the production.
I photograph dress rehearsals for:

PLAYS & DRAMA PRODUCTIONS

Dress Rehearsal Photography
Dress rehearsals are the best time to photograph theatre and performing arts productions.
They allow more freedom to move, capture different angles and photograph key scenes without distracting an audience. They also give the production team a chance to receive images before opening night or early in the show run, which can be useful for promotion.
Low-Light Theatre, Opera & Musical Theatre Photography
Theatre lighting can be stunning, but it is not always easy to photograph.
Stage productions often include dark scenes, spotlights, coloured lighting, fast movement, backlighting, haze, costume changes and dramatic shifts in brightness. Opera and musical theatre productions can also include large casts, detailed costumes, complex staging and big emotional moments that need careful timing.
I use professional Canon mirrorless cameras and premium Canon lenses suited to low-light theatre photography. This allows me to capture sharp, atmospheric images while preserving the look and feel of the stage lighting.
The aim is not to flatten everything with flash or make the production look like something it was not. The aim is to photograph the rehearsal in a way that feels true to the lighting, set design, costumes and emotion of the show.
Public Liability Insurance
I carry $20 million public liability insurance, which gives theatres, schools, councils, venues and production teams peace of mind.
This is especially important when photographing in professional theatres, school halls, public venues, council spaces, performance centres or anywhere that requires photographers and contractors to provide insurance documentation.
If your venue, school or event organiser requires a certificate of currency, this can be provided.
Why Hire a Professional Theatre Photographer?
Theatre productions take a huge amount of work.
The performers, crew, directors, teachers, choreographers, lighting designers, costume teams, stage managers and volunteers all contribute to something that may only happen a handful of times.
Professional dress rehearsal photography gives you a strong visual record of that work without disturbing the actual performances.
It also gives you images that are more useful for promotion, media, websites, posters, social media and future productions than phone photos or screenshots from video.
A good set of theatre photos helps people remember the show, share the experience and build excitement for what comes next.
