Newcastle Maternity Photography

Adam Cavanagh | Newcastle Maternity Photographer

Hi there and thanks for stopping by and visiting. My name is Adam Cavanagh and I am a professional Newcastle Maternity Photographer based in NSW, servicing Newcastle.

Maternity photography in Newcastle is about capturing a season that is equal parts exciting, emotional and slightly surreal.

One minute you are planning a nursery, the next you are wondering how your body just did that. Pregnancy is big and beautiful and intense and fleeting, all at once. Maternity photography gives you the chance to slow it all down and remember how this moment actually felt.

Our Newcastle maternity photography is relaxed, natural and very much about connection. No stiff poses. No awkward standing around wondering what to do. Just gentle guidance, good light and photographs that feel like you on your best, most real day.

Let’s turn your maternity photos into a collection of timeless memories that you’ll treasure forever. I love taking epic images that include the landscape and scenery but more importantly, taking meaningful photos that reflect you, your relationship and your personality.

Relaxed maternity photography that feels easy

Newcastle is an incredible place for maternity photography, especially if you love natural light and open space. The coastline offers soft, directional light for most of the day, which is ideal for creating relaxed, flattering maternity photography without harsh shadows or over styled setups.

With long stretches of beach, coastal walks and headlands, Newcastle gives us plenty of variety without the need for long drives or complicated planning. Everything is close, easy to access and flexible, which makes a huge difference during pregnancy. We can move slowly, take breaks when needed and choose locations that feel calm rather than crowded.

This mix of beautiful light, open space and easy locations makes Newcastle perfect for maternity photography that feels natural and unforced. Sessions feel more like a relaxed walk than a photoshoot, allowing you to enjoy the experience while we capture honest, emotional images along the way.

Natural maternity photography in Newcastle

Our approach to maternity photography in Newcastle is simple and easy going. Sessions are calm, unhurried and focused on real connection rather than stiff posing or forced moments.

We work with natural light and gentle movement, using Newcastle’s open spaces and coastal locations to keep everything feeling relaxed. You will never be asked to hold uncomfortable poses or stand around wondering what to do. Instead, we guide you lightly, offering direction when needed and space when it is not.

Newcastle maternity photography works best when it feels more like a quiet walk than a photoshoot. That is exactly how our sessions are designed. Comfortable, natural and centred around you, allowing genuine moments to unfold while we capture them in a way that feels effortless and true.

Newcastle Maternity Photography Locations

Newcastle offers a beautiful mix of coastal and natural locations that suit relaxed maternity photography perfectly. With open space, soft light and plenty of room to move at an easy pace, locations here allow sessions to feel calm rather than rushed or crowded.

Some of our favourite location types for Newcastle maternity photography include:

  • Caves Beach, is amazing location for maternity photos, but it has to be at low tide, stunning caves but very popular on weekends.
  • Redhead Beach, one of my favourites as it has a few nice spots on the one location. Easy access and beautiful at sunset.
  • Nobby’s Beach, is great options as you will see the sunset over the dunes.
  • Stockton Sand Dunes, epic sand dunes at sunset.
  • Merewether Beach, particularly the northern end with the large cliffs and at low tide.
  • Newcastle Beach, has nice open space with a lovely ocean pool at the northern end, which is great if you want some sunset photos in the water.
  • Hickson Street Lookout, a popular wedding ceremony location with lovely views.
  • Grannies Pool, towards Lake Macquarie is a gorgeous location if you want to get into calm waters. Also great for sunset and there is a long stretch of beach just up from it.
  • The Pines Picnic Area, in Martinsville is an amazing forest area that also has a small waterfall within walking distance.

The focus is always on creating a relaxed experience in a location that suits you. But you can pretty much shoot at any beach or park that you like. Just do it towards sunset and avoid locations with crowds of people.

Tips for choosing a location:

  • Avoid locations with crowds, you don’t want people in the background of your photos.
  • Do it towards sunset, so you have beautiful light.
  • If you live close to a beach or park it’s always nice to start at your own home and then move to a nice outdoor location.

Is this style of maternity photography right for you?

Newcastle maternity photography is a great fit if you are drawn to sessions that feel relaxed, natural and easy, rather than overly structured or staged. With open beaches, coastal walks and plenty of space to move, sessions are designed to feel more like a calm walk by the coast than a formal photoshoot.

This style of maternity photography is ideal if you value:

  • Natural and relaxed sessions that move at a comfortable pace
  • Emotion over perfection, with images that feel honest and unforced
  • No studio posing, just natural light and outdoor locations around Newcastle
  • Real moments that reflect connection, anticipation and this stage of life

If you are looking for highly styled studio maternity photography or very traditional posing, this approach may not be the right fit and that is completely okay. The focus here is on creating timeless, natural images that feel true to you and to this season.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re thinking about maternity photography, it’s totally normal to have questions. From timing and outfits to what the session actually feels like, these are the things we’re asked most often. If you’re still unsure about anything after reading through, you’re always welcome to get in touch and ask. We’re happy to help.

The ideal time for maternity photography is usually between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully defined, you are generally still comfortable moving around, and energy levels are often better than later in pregnancy. We recommend booking early to secure availability, especially if you plan to book newborn photography as well.

Absolutely! This is your story, and the location should hold meaning for you. Whether it’s a favourite spot, somewhere sentimental, or a setting that reflects your style, we’ll work together to find the perfect place to capture your love. I can also give you a few options to help you decide.

The best time for your maternity session is towards sunset, during “golden hour,”. The soft, warm light during these times creates a beautiful, flattering glow. So I would recommend that you start your session 30 to 60 mins before sunset so that you are in the best light possible.

Absolutely. Most people feel this way before their maternity photography session. Our approach is relaxed and guided, so you are never left wondering what to do. You can walk, sit, laugh, take breaks and just be yourself. No stiff posing or pressure, just natural moments that feel easy and flattering.

The goal with maternity photography is to show your bump, not hide it.
Simple, logo-free clothing always photographs best. We recommend avoiding large logos, busy patterns and anything with writing on it, as these tend to date images and pull attention away from you. Soft, neutral colours and plain fabrics keep the focus where it should be.
Form-fitting dresses, stretchy fabrics or pieces that gently hug your bump work beautifully. Flowy outfits can still work, but we usually suggest at least one look that clearly shows your shape. Whatever you choose, comfort and confidence matter most.

Yes, definitely. Maternity photography is about your family, not just your bump. Partners and children are very welcome and included in a natural, relaxed way. Sessions are unhurried and flexible, which makes a big difference when kids are involved.
