Maternity Photography

Adam Cavanagh | Maternity Photographer

Hi there and thanks for stopping by and visiting. My name is Adam Cavanagh and I am a professional Australian Portrait & Maternity Photographer based in NSW, servicing Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast.

Maternity photography is about capturing a season that is equal parts exciting, emotional and slightly surreal.

One minute you are planning a nursery, the next you are wondering how your body just did that. Pregnancy is big and beautiful and intense and fleeting, all at once. Maternity photography gives you the chance to slow it all down and remember how this moment actually felt.

Our maternity photography is relaxed, natural and very much about connection. No stiff poses. No awkward standing around wondering what to do. Just gentle guidance, good light and photographs that feel like you on your best, most real day.

Let’s turn your maternity photos into a collection of timeless memories that you’ll treasure forever. I love taking epic images that include the landscape and scenery but more importantly, taking meaningful photos that reflect you, your relationship and your personality.

Relaxed maternity photography that feels easy

If the idea of maternity photography makes you nervous, you are not alone. Most people tell us they are worried about posing, feeling awkward or not knowing what to do… that is where we come in.

Our maternity photography sessions are calm and easy going. You can walk, laugh, cuddle, sit down when you need to and just be yourselves. We guide you enough so everything looks great, without ever making it feel forced or uncomfortable.

The goal is simple. Maternity photography that feels natural, flattering and genuinely enjoyable.

Maternity photography locations

We offer maternity photography across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, and the Central Coast.

Each location brings a slightly different vibe to your maternity photography.

Newcastle is perfect if you love the coast, open spaces and soft ocean light.
Hunter Valley  suits couples who want something quieter, with bushland, rural scenery and room to breathe.
The Central Coast combines relaxed beach locations with lush natural settings for an easy, laid back feel.

If you are not sure which location is right for your maternity photography session, we will help you choose something that suits the season, your comfort level and the overall feel you want. Or just choose a location that is close to home for you.

When to book maternity photography

The sweet spot for maternity photography is usually between 28 and 34 weeks.

Your bump is beautifully defined, you are generally still comfortable moving around, and energy levels are usually better than later in pregnancy. We always recommend booking your maternity photography session early, especially if you are hoping to book newborn photography as well.

Why Maternity Photography Matters

Pregnancy is one of the few times in life where everything feels like it’s moving forward, even while time seems to stand still. A maternity session gives you the chance to pause and document this season before it slips by. Not just what you looked like, but how it felt to be waiting, hoping and imagining the life ahead.

Maternity photography is also something you are creating for the future. These images become a way to show your child, and your family, just how loved and wanted they were before they arrived. Long after the details of pregnancy fade, these photos remain as proof of the excitement, happiness and connection that surrounded them from the very beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re thinking about maternity photography, it’s totally normal to have questions. From timing and outfits to what the session actually feels like, these are the things we’re asked most often. If you’re still unsure about anything after reading through, you’re always welcome to get in touch and ask. We’re happy to help.

Absolutely! This is your story, and the location should hold meaning for you. Whether it’s a favourite spot, somewhere sentimental, or a setting that reflects your style, we’ll work together to find the perfect place to capture your love. I can also give you a few options to help you decide.

The best time for your maternity session is towards sunset, during “golden hour,”. The soft, warm light during these times creates a beautiful, flattering glow. So I would recommend that you start your session 30 to 60 mins before sunset so that you are in the best light possible.

Absolutely. Most people feel this way before their maternity photography session. Our approach is relaxed and guided, so you are never left wondering what to do. You can walk, sit, laugh, take breaks and just be yourself. No stiff posing or pressure, just natural moments that feel easy and flattering.

The goal with maternity photography is to show your bump, not hide it.
Simple, logo-free clothing always photographs best. We recommend avoiding large logos, busy patterns and anything with writing on it, as these tend to date images and pull attention away from you. Soft, neutral colours and plain fabrics keep the focus where it should be.
Form-fitting dresses, stretchy fabrics or pieces that gently hug your bump work beautifully. Flowy outfits can still work, but we usually suggest at least one look that clearly shows your shape. Whatever you choose, comfort and confidence matter most.

Yes, definitely. Maternity photography is about your family, not just your bump. Partners and children are very welcome and included in a natural, relaxed way. Sessions are unhurried and flexible, which makes a big difference when kids are involved.
